The Mas-Orange IT architecture, the IT Team, and the MANEDS Chair

History

In 2021, MasMovil group took an strategic decission: the business systems (BSS) that will support all their processes will be home-made based on existing opensource technology. There was enough opensource technology and professionals capable of handling it. The classical MAKE-or-BUY decission was taken.

Nevertheless, this technical decission conveyed an important consequence: if all the BSS were to be made at home, then a big SW engineering team was required. There were no external tools supported by third party vendors. Thus, a big team of more than 200 people was contracted, and not only systems and developments were covered, but also a methodology was designed.

This big IT Team foundation also had a big challenge: talent recruiting. The existing recruting process was expensive, almost blind (you could hardly know about the candidate), and it took a long time to teach them in their platforms.

The former MasMovil IT decided to change the way that new young IT professionals were recruited and baby-developed: they rely on the best technical universities and catch the talent in the source, assisted by the people that best know them: their professors.

And this is how the Catedra MANEDS (MasMovil for Applied-AI Network and Digital Services) was created by Dr. Alvaro Paricio (a former MasMovil Group Manager), and Dr. Miguel A. Lopez.

The purpose

Every year, Catedra MANEDS jointly with MasOrange defines a portfolio of TFG / TFM proposals covering several topics where MasOrange forecast that will have sucess to be contracted for their technical teams.

During a whole academic period, the selected students will study, develop, and grow in M+O’s technical platforms, acquiring the necessary technical skills, the proper methodology, and overall, the best soft-skills to become a sucessfull professional for the best technical team.

Each student has two tutors, one from the academic side, another from the professional side that will guide him/her through the project development. There are regular touch-points and milestones that the student is going to overcome such as:

  • Defending an elevator ptich to M+O teams.
  • Reporting the evolution of the project.
  • Defending publicly the TFG/TFM.
  • Or even, going to congresses to expose his/her findings and research.

At the end of the period, the HHRR team will analyze the performance and the habilities of the student and will take a decission about the professional insertion into the best tech-team.

Rather than hard, it is challenging: 100% of our students have succeeded in this goal.

The Technical Platform

M+O uses the best top opensource platforms and is constantly evolving the platform, not only for new services, but also for better performances, advanced architectures, and most effective patterns.

In this sense you will find an strategic agreeming with Google-Cloud and AWS for supporting the backends in the best cost/performance ratio.

We cannot disclose all the technical details in such a post, but you will discover them during the grant.
